Scout Master

October 9, 2022

I was the associate producer for this feature-length documentary on sexual abuse in the Boy Scouts of America, focusing on one serial abuser in 1990s rural Arkansas. I tracked down court records, original primary documents, and archival material; recruited and oversaw local researchers; filed numerous public records requests; and fact-checked the film. Scout Master premiered at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival in October 2022.

Buried Truths

November 24, 2021

I was the associate producer for this episode of Al Jazeera’s Fault Lines examining the legacy of boarding schools for Indigenous children. I located and interviewed boarding school survivors, their descendants, and Indigenous archaeologists; obtained archival material; helped shoot the film in the field; and fact-checked the script. “Buried Truths” was nominated for a 2022 News & Documentary Emmy and recognized with awards from the Society for Professional Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association.

Reasonable Doubt

October 19, 2021

I produced and wrote this Al Jazeera multimedia story that complements the Fault Lines documentary “The Jim Crow Convictions.” Using primary documents, the interactive article unpacks why one Louisiana man was incarcerated for 25 years after being convicted by a non-unanimous jury. I obtained records from parish police departments and district attorney’s offices, analyzed weaknesses in the prosecution’s case, and tracked down jurors from the 1997 trial.

The Jim Crow Convictions

October 4, 2021

I worked for months with a small team to learn every detail we could about one Louisiana man’s 1997 trial that resulted in a non-unanimous jury verdict: I filed public records requests, obtained and analyzed court records, and tracked down key figures from the trial. “The Jim Crow Convictions” was nominated for a 2022 News & Documentary Emmy and honored with a Public Service Award from the Society of Professional Journalists Louisiana.

The AFRICOM Files

July 6, 2021

I supported an investigative reporter and editor with months of research to make sense of hundreds of pages of military investigative files on sexual crimes. I created and maintained a spreadsheet and organizational system for the documents, identified patterns and particularly impactful stories, and reviewed Department of Defense reports on military sexual assault.

No Consent

May 26, 2021

For this documentary on allegations of medical abuse at a Georgia immigrant detention center, I filed a dozen open records requests, obtained and analyzed documents including medical certifications and business registries, helped chase accountability figures, and fact-checked the script.

Phillips Square vendors struggle to grasp why they were asked to leave

August 3, 2018

For the Montreal Gazette, I reported a feature story on two longtime street vendors who were removed from a public square. The city justified their decision to evict the vendors by pointing to the results of a public consultation, but after I reviewed public records and pressed city bureaucrats, they could not provide evidence that the consultation’s participants had wanted the vendors gone. Masha & Dasha

April 23, 2018

How can a person forget their native language? Two sisters examine why they stopped speaking Russian after moving to the United States as children. I directed, shot, edited, and wrote this short documentary, which screened at the 2019 Athens International Film and Video Festival, the Festival of Migrant Film in Slovenia, and the Somos Migrantes Film Festival in Baltimore.
